Nirmala Sitharaman Biography

Nirmala Sitharaman  is an Indian politician who serves as India's current Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs. She was born on August 18, 1959. She is a member of Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India since 2014. Sitharaman served as  Minister of Defense of India, thus becoming the second women Defense Minister of India and also the second Finance Minister of India after Indira Gandhi, and Finance Minister for the first time.

She has served as the Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs of the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Commerce and Industry with an independent post. Prior to this, he served as BJP's national spokesperson

Family and personal history of Nirmala Sitharaman:

Nirmala Sitharaman was born on 18 August 1959 in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu to a middle class family. Her father worked in the railways, while her mother was a housewife and a great lover of books. That is the disciplinary nature of her father and her mother's love books. She spent her childhood in various parts of Tamil Nadu as her  father's work was transferable. Therefore, traveling and rearing came naturally to her.

She completed her graduation from Sitalakshmi Ramaswamy College, Tiruchirapalli and received her master's degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. Her favorite subject was globalization and its impact on developing countries. It is this that inspired her to become the Minister of Commerce of the Government of India. She married Parakala Prabhakar in 1986 and the couple moved to London. Sitharaman found success in the corporate world, but he eventually returned to India in 1991. The couple is blessed with a daughter.

2. Sitharaman, in her sixties, was the first woman to be appointed full-time minister of defense minister of India in September 2017.

3. Although the defense minister was assigned to three ministers under Modi 1.0 regime and Sitharaman was seen as a tail hitter for many attacks, she proved to be a firm player. In fact, it has fueled several policy changes, such as the new Defense Manufacturing Policy and the launched UP and Tamil Nadu Defense Industrial Corridors.

4. Prior to this, She served as Minister of State (independent post) in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and also managed the departments of Finance and Corporate Affairs as Minister of State.

5. Born on August 18, 1959 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, she moved to Tiruchirappalli to complete her graduation from Sithalakshmi Ramaswamy College. She then reached the capital, where She received her M.A. in International Studies from the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in 1984.

6. Chasing her mentors, she follows her future husband, Dr. Parakal  Prabhakar and they got married in 1986.

7. The couple soon moved to London, where Sitharaman worked as a senior manager at Pricewaterhouse Coopers, as well as a stint with BBC World before returning to India in 1991.

8. Sitharaman and three family members, including a daughter, are currently settled in Hyderabad. Some of her  favorite hobbies include travel, trekking, cooking and music.

9. In 2003, during the tenure of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, she became a member of the National Commission for Women till 2005. The following year, she joined the BJP and became the party's national spokesperson.

10. Since 2016, She has served as a member of the Upper House of Parliament, Rajya Sabha.
